Quick Guide to Applying for Masters at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Sweden

In my previous post, I mentioned that I would create a simple guide to the application process for master’s programmes at KTH which opened last week on 16th October. KTH does offer more than 60 masters programmes in different disciplines and taught in English. And just in case you didn’t know, KTH is ranked 27th most international university in the world according to Times Higher Education. What that means, partially, is that I get bragging rights since I study here! This could be YOUR university too!
Approximately one year ago, I went through this application/admissions process and it hasn’t changed much since then. Here’s how you can go about coming to KTH.
1. Identify the particular programme you want to study from the list of programmes at KTH. You can click the link for each programme to go direct to its unique website and read more detailed info about the programme content, structure, admission requirements and even get contact details of professors and current students of the programme so you can ask specific questions.
2. Open www.universityadmissions.se which is the central body that coordinates all applications to Swedish Universities. You can view a quick guideby clicking “Start your journey here” on the left-hand side-bar of the website. Set up an account and fill in your contact and personal details. In case you have applied through the website before in previous years, you don’t need to open a new account since you can just use your old account.
3. Get to the courses and programmes section and search for the programmes you are interested in and add them to your application. You are allowed to select up to a maximum of 4 programme choices. Make sure that you set them in order of priority with your most desired programme at the top of the list. I was fortunate to get my first choice and end up at KTH!
4. If you aren’t a citizen of a country in the European Economic Area, you will be required to pay an application fee of 900SEK (about $124). You can do this using your credit or debit card right on the same website.
5. Now you are done with the online part of the application. Make sure you submit (by clicking the submit button!) before 15th January 2015 even though the application fee can be paid later but before 2nd February 2015.
6. Prepare supporting documents to your application; proof of citizenship (usually a copy of the relevant page in your passport), proof of English language skills, certified grade transcripts and certificates from your previous studies plus any other documents that might be specifically required for your desired programme like a CV/résumé, motivational letter and letters of recommendation (these are the extras I submitted for my programme). These should arrive at University Admissions by 2nd February 2015.
7. Keep following my blog while waiting to hear news from the selection process which will come by the end of March.
KTH has developed a nice timeline to guide you through the entire process and you can also see all the relevant deadlines and reminders so you don’t miss anything. In case you need a scholarship, start your search here. And bu the way, this procedure is pretty much the same for the other Swedish universities, just in case KTH doesn’t offer a programme that you’re interested in. You use the same admissions website and you can browse more programmes from other universities.
