International Studies Abroad - The Challenges for a Student

Written by Mehr Virk:

International studies abroad can be a lot of fun for a student, as you get to experience a new culture and meet people from different cultures, as well as experience living in a different climate. All these activities can be a lot of fun, but, at the same time, there are also certain challenges that you face when you decide to live abroad.

The first challenge is to adjust to the new surroundings. There may be times when you feel home sick. The feeling of home sickness may be minimized by keeping in contact with your family and friends back home. Also, you may feel better if there are other people from your country in the country you have gone to. Sharing thoughts about the experience of living abroad in the country you are in and common interests, such as a sport that you both like to watch, may be comforting for you.

Adjusting to the local culture may mean developing an understanding for the customs of the country or area and learning the language spoken over there. Language is a barrier that exists more in some parts of the world than others.

As a student doing international studies abroad in English, it may not been compulsory for you to learn the language of the native people. However, if you plan on finding a job in a country where English is not the first or even second language, you may find it useful to learn their language. Of course, you may not need to become an expert in the language, but developing a decent understanding may help you get a job you want.

Studying in a multicultural environment can provide you the opportunity to learn the customs of others through observation and interaction. You may be in a class where people from different parts of the world are studying. Sharing space with such a diverse group of people may increase your understanding of your own country and culture as it may put things in perspective regarding what you believe in and what you like to do.

Another aspect of international studies abroad is taking care of oneself. Students who are not use to preparing food for themselves and managing all the everyday aspects of their life, may have to make big adjustments to adapt to the new life style.

Studying abroad is more than just getting foreign education; it is a journey of self-discovery and world-discovery. Let's help you begin that journey by preparing your application
